The first trailer for the comedy Our Idiot Brother has been released. The film first premiered at Sundance and boasts a wildly impressive cast that includes Paul Rudd Elizabeth Banks Zooey Deschanel Emily Mortimer and Rashida Jones. Directed by Jesse Peretz (The Chateau) the film tells the story of a ne'er-do-well brother who successively barges into the lives of his three sisters.
Every family has one: the sibling who is always just a little bit behind the curve when it comes to getting his life together. For sisters Liz (Emily Mortimer) Miranda (Elizabeth Banks) and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel) that person is their perennially upbeat brother Ned (Paul Rudd) an erstwhile organic farmer whose willingness to rely on the honesty of mankind is a less-than-optimum strategy for a tidy trouble-free existence. Ned may be utterly lacking in common sense but he is their brother and so after his girlfriend dumps him and boots him off the farm his sisters once again come to his rescue. As Liz Emily and Natalie each take a turn at housing Ned their brother's unfailing commitment to honesty creates more than a few messes in their comfortable routines. But as each of their lives begins to unravel Ned's family comes to realize that maybe in believing and trusting the people around him Ned isn't such an idiot after all.
The trailer hits all the right notes with the pitch-perfect Rudd coming off as equal parts lovable and pathetic. The supporting cast looks fantastic as well. Ned Rochlin (Rudd) looks for the good in every situation and in everyone which often puts him at odds with the world around him -- especially his family. Upon being released from jail for a stupid mistake Ned is kicked off of the organic farm he lives and works on by his ex-girlfriend Janet (Hahn) who also insists on keeping his beloved dog Willie Nelson. Having nowhere else to go he turns to his family three ambitious sisters (Banks Deschanel Mortimer) and an overbearing mother (Knight). Ned crashes at each of their homes in succession and brings honesty happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives. In other words he wreaks havoc.
Ned (Paul Rudd) is an eternally sunny hippie with no room in his life for anything other than constant optimism. His belief in people`s essential goodness lands him in stir when he sells some weed to a cop who claims to be suffering from depression. Eight months later he`s released from jail but all is not well. His girlfriend has kicked him out of their commune refusing to allow him to see his beloved dog Willie Nelson. Penniless he spends time living with each of his three beautiful sisters (Elizabeth Banks Emily Mortimer and Zooey Deschanel)- unintentionally turning their lives upside down.
REVIEW: MY IDIOT BROTHER was not at all the film I expected considering the somewhat zany premise and title and I mean that as a good thing. Going in I expected a gross-out cheeky comedy but that`s not what I got. MY IDIOT BROTHER is without a doubt a funny movie but it`s more along the lines of something like THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT as it refrains from slapstick and has a bigger heart than you`d expect.
